Kalki 2898 AD is a vision in many ways beyond a mere film; it’s a cinematic franchise in the making. Being yet another Indian Telugu language epic science fiction spectacular, Nag Ashwin had certainly brought out something extraordinary with this one. The film released in June 2024 has an impressive star-cast like Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani. 

The film is placed in a post apocalyptic world and centres on the activities of a group of people trying to protect the unborn child of a subject of laboratory experiment called Kalki. The plot of the movie is based on the Hindu mythology therefore combining religious aspects with a sci-fi movie. The concept of world building is well done and engaging and carefully pulls the viewer into a future that is at once futuristic and bleak. 

I said that one of the successes of the film is the Visual Effects category. The whole setting of the movie such as post-apocalyptic world, some elements of the future and the overall action scenes are very well executed. All in all, it has splendid art direction that makes the world visually convincing and at the same time, unfamiliar. 

There is splendid acting by all cast members and each proved worthy of headline acts. Now coming to the performances, Prabhas who plays the male lead has given a stellar and interiorsated performance. Amitabh Bachchan is charming as usual as the chief minister, Kamal Haasan does a great job portraying the antagonist and Deepika Padukone is dignified as the chief minister’s wife. 

Nevertheless, it is hardly possible to speak about the complete problemlessness of the film. The pacing of the movie is another flaw that is characterized by sequences that are either slow or fast and unfocused. The lovers’ story is quite elaborate, thus presenting some confusion when explaining some aspects of the narrative to audiences who are not well-versed in Hindu epics. 

Nonetheless, Kalki 2898 AD is an experience which can only be provided in a theater and this very fact, makes it worth watching. It is an unconventional and rather challenging movie that does not fit into the framework of Indian film industry. The film has received rather favorable reviews so far hence the producers have already announced that there will be a second part to the film, meaning this is only the start of a big production series. 

Whether you’re a fan of science fiction, action, or Indian cinema, Kalki 2898 AD is a film that demands to be seen. It is a visual spectacle that will leave you breathless, and a thought-provoking exploration of humanity’s future.
